Idli is a popular snack prepared in all common households of South Indian states. It tastes better when served with sambar, which is a delicious stew prepared from lentils. Since idli contains no spice at all, the tangy taste of sambar complements this simple snack in satisfying the taste buds of people. It is traditional to serve idlis with a bowl of sambar all over South India and even in other parts of the country. Apart from the taste, this food combination is also preferred due to many other valid reasons.

The preparation of idli needs no oil at all since it is a steamed food and only the moulds need to be greased before pouring in the batter. Likewise, a very little amount of oil is used in cooking the sambar, where all chopped vegetables are boiled in the lentil stew. Hence, people can expect much lesser calorie gain after having some idlis with the yummy sambar in breakfast. 

The batter made for preparing idli is fermented for several hours before subjected to steam in moulds. This fermentation process makes the idli more easily digestible, due to the action of good bacteria and enzymes. The sambar can be digested quickly because of the presence of tamarind pulp in this lentil stew. Thus, this breakfast is ideal for people suffering from weaker digestion.

Idli is made of rice and black lentils, which are crushed with water, to make the thick batter. These two ingredients are the staple foods in India and help in fulfilling the appetite of people. Likewise, the sambar prepared with plenty of vegetables is also effective in filling up the stomach easily. Therefore, dieticians suggest the intake of idli with sambar to obese people so that their cravings for food can be reduced. 

Parboiled rice used in making idli contains lots of fibres, which can make the bowel movement easier. Similarly, several vegetables, like drumstick, carrots, turnips, and broccoli, are rich in fibres and thus, added to the sambar so that this food can improve the digestive system. 

The black lentil contains a large amount of protein and minerals, which can make a person healthier. Iron is the most important mineral that should be present in every human body in a certain quantity. Hence, people like to have idli and sambar in the breakfast of growing children and elderly people, who need iron for maintaining the haemoglobin level in the body and to boost the cellular metabolism in the body.

Apart from all these above-mentioned health benefits, idli sambar is also preferred in breakfast because it takes very little time to cook these dishes in the morning. The batter for making idli is prepared on the previous evening and now, people use readymade sambar powder instead of grinding the roasted spices for cooking sambar. So it is easier for busy homemakers to serve these South Indian foods at the breakfast table.
